For millions of people, human driving is not freedom—it is dependence. We must ask for rides, arrange transportation in advance, or pay more because we cannot operate a car. A system that does not become distracted, impaired, or exhausted could make roads safer while giving us independence other people already take for granted.

Critics say public roads should not become a proving ground for privately controlled technology and warn that rapid adoption could eliminate driving jobs, normalize extensive location tracking, and leave people dependent on a small number of automated fleets. The agency must decide what evidence justifies expansion and what protections should come first.

A new transportation option should not become an irreversible transportation dependency.

The mobility advocate is right that the familiar system already causes serious harm and denies independence to many people. The professional driver is right that public-road users cannot individually consent to experimental risk and that rapid market change can eliminate meaningful alternatives before democratic rules catch up. Expansion is justified when evidence is independently comparable to the conditions proposed, companies accept clear responsibility, regulators can stop operations quickly, and the public gains mobility without quietly surrendering privacy, local authority, or access to human-operated transportation.
